Hey! Pause for a minute. Before you dive in, please make sure you are totally up-to-speed on my recent Master Cleanse experience and check out “How to Know When You Need to Cleanse” first. You’ll be so glad you did!

There are hundreds and hundreds of different types of cleansing options. The one I felt most pulled to do was the time-tested Master Cleanse – otherwise known as The Lemonade Diet.

According to Tom Woloshyn, author of “The Complete Master Cleanse”, the Master Cleanse is one of the most simple, effective, and inexpensive cleansing and healing programs available. It is a liquid monodiet designed to work with and compliment your body’s own cleansing and detoxifying processes, and at the same time to nourish your body with things it needs to function. At the very basis of the cleanse, the main ingredients are good, clean water, fresh pressed lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. So, for 10 days, essentially all you’re taking in is multiple glasses of this liquid, nourishing, cleansing concoction. No food. No tea. No coffee. No bone broth. Not even a bite or a lick of something is allowed. Just you, “lemonade” and water, on a “real life” cleansing island for 10 days.

BEFORE jumping into this cleanse, please take some time to prepare your mind, body and space. For me, this started a good month out…

  • First, I bought and read every book I could find on the topic. Then, I created space in my life to surrender to this process (physically marked off the dates on my calendar).
  • A couple weeks before the cleanse started, I got all my supplements needed for ultimate success in order, bought a new journal, several new books (including fiction!!), bought three new lemon juicers, loaded up on local, grade B maple syrup, made reflexology and massage therapy appointments (to take place during the cleanse) and had a session with my Naturopathic Doctor for muscle testing (to see what areas of my body were most asking for attention and confirm that I had parasites).
  • One week out, I ditched all sweeteners, grains, caffeine and dairy that had recently sneaked back in my life (thank you, stress!), and got settled into a self-care routine that was centered around gentle movement, meditation and positive affirmations.
  • A couple days before the first day of the cleanse, I made sure we had an abundance of organic lemons. (You’ll make lots of trips for fresh lemons as you go through 60 – 80 per person!)

My husband signed up to do this cleanse with me. His first. My fifth “real” cleansing experience. I was beyond thrilled to be doing this with him. And, truly, it proved to be one of the most incredible bonding experiences imaginable (a topic worthy of it’s own blog post – coming soon)!

About the Moon & Cleansing
Ideally, cleansing will take place on the new moon, full moon or between the new and the full moon. This is when the body is best suited energetically to truly release all that no longer serves it (physically and emotionally). Unfortunately, this timeline didn’t exactly match what fit best for our lifestyle, so we started a few days prior to the new moon. In our case, planning around our “stress” cycles ranked higher importance than the moon cycles.

Detox All Areas of Your Life
It was so important to me that we were able to truly surrender to the process and NOT be overwhelmed with life to-dos. Yes, we had to still keep up with our day to day responsibilities and, most importantly, our busy 3.5 year old… BUT at the same time, we made a point to say no to any extras (which honestly, this type of cleansing naturally invites other “cleansing” into your life… I found myself staying far away from social scenes, social media, clearing out clutter in my home, reorganizing spaces, etc. etc.). CLEANSING is a time for detoxing all areas that are distracting or no longer serving you.

Yes, You’ll Lose Weight, BUT…
Before I dive into the day-to-day of what this cleansing experience looked like for us, let’s talk about weight loss. Most people (sadly) do cleansing because they want to lose weight. In fact, many celebrities have done this exact same cleanse before a big event and drop 10 to 20 pounds, have glowing skin, with tabloids saying they never looked so good. Let me just preface by saying YOU WILL lose weight (women ½ to 1 pound per day / men 1 to 2 pounds per day), but don’t make that the reason why you are doing this cleanse. Focus on the million other benefits that come to your body and mind from this experience…

A Quick Note on Supplements
These are the supplement we used during the cleanse to support our goals. Suggested amounts will vary person to person. I muscle tested how much of each we needed throughout each day. Please refer to the recommended reading (see below) and/or work with a Naturopathic Doctor for a more customized program. 

Herbal Laxatives – Pooping is the biggest component of cleansing (obviously). You need to make sure your channels of elimination are working properly. The book gives you the option of doing herbal laxatives or a salt-water flush. We did a combination of both.

Digestive Enzymes – We took anywhere from 6 to 12 of these today to help bulk up the stool and give the ultimate eliminate.

Diatomaceous-Earth (food grade) – A wonderful parasite cleanser (let’s face it, the best time to kill them is when you are starving them!)

Herbal Laxative Tea – This is a great addition to the herbal laxatives. We enjoyed a cup each night.

Probiotics – Important to keep the gut nourished to make the living space even less inviting for parasites/candida.

Here’s some highlights of my day to day…

Day 1:
Excited but anxious to start. Mid-day came on the slight headache, feeling extreme fatigue… I took it as easy as possible. Went for a three mile walk together in the evening. Movement made us both feel a lot better.

Day 2:
Slight headache, still sleepy. Continued to take it as easy as possible during the day. Went for a 3 mile bike ride.

The word we used to describe this cleanse on this day was “Boring”… As real foodies, we realized how much we talk about food and how much time we devote to preparing food.

Had sharp pains up my body/back of legs indicating a bowel movement was coming.

Day 3
Very, very little energy. Lower back pain in my kidney area. SUPER uncomfortable. Hungry and annoyed. Lemonade drink doesn’t taste good for me anymore. Achy all over body. Nightmares throughout night (emotional releasing).

Day 4
Kidney/low back pain still. Made an “emergency” session with my massage therapist for a lymph drainage and reflexology. Immediately felt 1,000x better  – had way more energy. Lemonade drink tasted way better. Felt like I got my mojo back.

One thing we noticed is how SLLLLLLOOOOWWW time goes by on the cleanse. Most of our days go by so fast we can’t hardly stand it… Cleansing, it’s like life moves in slow motion. Crazy!

Went for another bike ride. Terrible leg aches / pains (quite certain it’s joint pain from parasite die off).

Energized from movement.

Reading like crazy to help me stay grounded (and distracted). More nightmares (hello, suppressed emotions).

Day 5
Life feels slowwwww! Is it tomorrow yet? No appetite.

Day 6
Woke up in the middle of night with major cramps / flu like symptoms. It was intense.
Hard for me to get in the 6 lemonades a day…
Relatively high/normal energy for us both. Not thinking of food at all.

Day 7
Worked out at gym first time. Did Sprints/Lifted. Overall felt pretty good.
Noticed how amazing my skin is looking.
On the downside, I’m fighting a little brain fog.

Day 8
High Energy. Went for 3 mile walk. Love the way we look. My face is glowing. My tongue is looking clearer and clearer each day. Bored with cleanse though, both of us are mentally ready to have food back in our life.

Day 9
Still high energy. More walking. More readiness to be done.

Day 10
Forced myself to do salt water flush. Overall feel super amazing (no achyness) but so excited to be done and start to gently introduce the orange juice.

Day 11
Today is all about fresh-pressed orange juice, and it tastes ah-mazing!

Final weigh in – not that really it matters but I know you are wondering: I lost about 10 pounds. My husband about 20 pounds.

Each day, we committed to some sort of movement. We eliminated 3 to 8 times a day. A lot of mucus, old toxic waste. Immediately post cleanse, I felt amazing. Super high energy, amazing sleep/schedule, renewed taste buds, thirst for life’s goals, purpose and on and on.

Tips for the Ultimate Success

  1. Prepare your mind & body
    Truly, this is the most important step. When you prepare your mind and body for this experience, you are committing yourself to the results.
  2. Read and re-read the books & success stories often throughout the cleanse – make sure you follow all the steps.
    Don’t start until you read the material. And then when you start, keep reading the material! We kept a book in every room which made it super convenient to pick up and read a few parts. This is so helpful in keeping you grounded in your decision to cleanse.
  3. Own your self-care
    Carve out time for you! Make space to meditate, to be one with the sun, to listen to music, read a book and watch your favorite show. I scheduled four bodywork therapy sessions (massage, reflexology and lymph drainage) during the cleanse. This not only further supported the detox, but allowed me to relax and surrender to this time of intense healing. These appointments also gifted me something to look forward to through the 10-days.
  4. Be Organized and Prepared for Travel
    It’s highly unlikely that you will be able to be stationed at home during the entire cleanse… So get yourself prepared with extras of everything so you can be set for traveling and owning this cleanse in “real life”.
  5. Commit to movement each day
    If you want to feel energized during this cleanse, you gotta move your body. This is KEY.
  6. Take the right supplements for you.
    Don’t hesitate to work with someone (like me 😉 ) to make sure that you are getting the absolute most of this cleanse.
  7. Do it with someone you love
    I can’t say it enough. Doing this cleanse with my husband was one of the BEST bonding experience. Truly!
  8. Own it to the finish line & BEYOND
    Stay rooted in your WHY to get you across the finish line, but DON’T stop there. Remember, a cleanse is an opportunity to LEAP forward in your healing results (soooo the last thing you want to do is take a step backwards), own real, nourishing food and go off the cleanse gently per the instructions in the reading material.

After the Cleanse
